In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. He wrote it by hand, exclusively for their eyes alone. He strongly expressed his desire that the manuscript remain in the family and he would not have it published in his lifetime. After, his death, he requested it not be published during the lifetimes of his children. For 85 years, his family followed his wishes. When his youngest son died in 1933, he did not impose any restriction on the publication of the manuscript, except that proceeds from publication be shared among the family. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.”
