In 1905 the Chicago Edison Company (later Commonwealth Edison after its 1907 merger with Commonwealth Electric) headed by Samuel Insull acquired the Pawnee RR in conjunction with Illinois Midland Coal Co. Headquartered in Chicago the C&IM operated until 1996. Its maximum route miles were 119.7 in 1930. Dieselization began in 1955. It still runs as Illinois & Midland Railroad.
