Ancient carved ivory from Dieppe, France around 1850, with central medallion featuring a young Napoleon III. There are numerous flaws in this old piece, chips, cracks, and whatnot, and so I have included them clearly in the photographs. Normally a piece such as this would command a premium price due to its age, history, and workmanship, but given the wear I have scaled back the cost. Ivory work is done in Paris, but it differs from the Dieppe work, in that it is less elaborately carved. Articles of smooth and highly polished surface may easily be distinguished as Parisian ware, and, though beautiful, give more the impression of manufactured goods, than of being specimens of handicraft from an artist’s workshop. This trade has been the source of money-making to Dieppe for generations; indeed the hardy fishermen of this flowery little harbour, claim the honor of being the first to introduce ivory into France in 1364.
