    The piece is in a mat to fit a standard-sized frame. Originally cost over $300. This mid 20th century charcoal on paper portrait is by Malcolm “Mac” McClain (1923-2012), a Southern California painter, ceramicist, and poet. McClain studied at the New School of Social Research (1947), La Escuela de Pintura y Escultra de La Callejon Esmeralda in Mexico City (1953), and later at La Escuela de Bellas Artes in Morelia for ceramics. It was there that he worked alongside Ross Curtis, a fellow artist. McClain returned to the U.S. to finish classes at Pomona College in 1955. He began an MFA program at the Los Angeles County Art Institute, and from 1959-1963 lived in Tijuana and taught at the Art Center in La Jolla. He taught sculpture and drawing at Pomona College from 1964-1965, and taught ceramics at Cal State LA for 23 years. Signed lower left. 18.5ʺW × 22ʺH
