However, the Padres were swept in the Series by the dominant New York Yankees. The team struggled in the following years, but in 1998 they once again made the playoffs, only to lose in the National League Championship Series to the Atlanta Braves. Despite some individual successes, such as Tony Gwynn's continued excellence at the plate, the Padres were unable to consistently compete at a high level during the 1990s. It wasn't until 2020 that the Padres finally won their first playoff series since 1998, marking a new era of success for the franchise.
