Kantha Quilt Hand Embroidery Cotton Thread East Bengal Vintage from the 1930s Kantha Probably From East Bengal(Bangladesh)Region India. C.1900.Its size is W- 74cm x L186-cm 29in. X 73in Kantha quilts alongside are the pride of Bengal .Kantha quilts are highly decorative with figurative motifs scattered across the quilt and native to south eastern Asia. The quilter interchanges stitches to form images of people and animals, domestic and agricultural implements. Motifs found in early Kantha embroidery include many symbols that were derived from ancient art. These symbols depict or are reflective of nature, such as the sun, the tree of life and the the universe. It was not until later that Kantha embroidery was used as a medium of cultural and religious significance, which came about as a result of Hinduism's influence and was used in ceremonies and pujas, including to celebrate weddings and births.
