Frame size is approx 19" x 14.25". Top right corner is signed in pencil by Phillip Perkins and says "Perkins 1959". The right side of the paper has J. Annonay watermark. Philip Perkins (1907-1970) studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and at Chicago Art Institute. In 1932 he moved to Paris studying w/ Jean Marchaud and Louis Marcoussis. He continued his studies with Fernand Leger. In 1934 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuilleries in Paris. Perkins left Paris and moved to New York sharing a studio w/Surrealist artist Yves Tanguy. He is best known for geometric, cubist influenced work of the 40s. Perkins returned to Nashville in '48 where he taught at UT's Extension School. Two years later he received a fellowship from the School of International Painting in Sergovia, Spain. For the next 4 years Perkins painted & exhibited in Spain & on the Isle of Ibiza. Perkins returned to Paris to live and paint in '59 returning to Nashville again two years later.
